Shirley M. (Chico) Backner, 75, passed away peacefully, Monday, August 7, 2023, in her home in Newburgh, Indiana, with her husband of 55 years, Ronald Backner, by her side.
She was born May 2, 1948, in Cecil, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Joseph and Wanda Mitchell Vanhorenbeck.
Shirley and her husband, best-friend, and love of her life, Ronald, enjoyed drinking beer and eating wings while watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates together.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her favorite vacation spot was the beach.
She loved every holiday and enjoyed decorating her home and cooking for the holidays.
She and her husband loved gardening and canning together.
She was an auxiliary member of Post 44 American Legion in Newburgh, IN where she enjoyed playing bingo on Monday night.
She is survived by her three children, Valerie (Bill) Hunt, Lory Adcock, Schonni (Jimmy) Schneider, 7 grandchildren Amanda, Steven, Alexandra, Tawni, Sam, Adam, Hayden, and 3 great-grandchildren Riley, Myla, Kameron, two brothers David Vanhorenbeck (Peg), Ronald Vanhorenbeck (Jan), three sisters: Yvonne Weddell, Dorothy Conn, Barbara Ann Wyrostek (Frederick) and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers Joseph and Kenneth Vanhorenbeck and two sisters JoAnn McKay and Bonnie Ringer.
A celebration of life will be held in the near future.
As Shirley was a lover of all animals, the family requests that in lieu of flowers you make a donation to your favorite animal rescue in her memory.
