Shirley Ann (Rogers) Hume, 93, of Winslow, Indiana passed away on January 11, 2026 marking the end of a life that was full of her caring, humor, and strength. Shirley and her much loved husband, Donald, always tried to fit in as much enjoyment into their lives as possible and were always looking forward to their next big or small adventure.
Shirley was the kind of mother who was always aware of what was needed and when. Often quietly in the background, she saw that family needs were met. Like many mothers, she kept a home amidst family members who were often blissfully unaware of all that her caregiving and homemaking required…clean clothes were in the closet hemmed to each daughter’s height, things that were needed seemed to magically appear, birthday and holiday celebrations simply and meaningfully occurred and, as those moments became years, a treasure trove of happy family memories were lovingly stored.
All along the way, every effort was made to nurture the interests and talents of each family member. When her three girls were grown, Shirley worked as an Instructor/Supervisor for 30 summers at Culver Academies Summer Camps, serving as a mentor and friend to many young women from across the country and around the world. Then, when she was free to pursue her own dreams, she traveled. Exploring with Donald and the rest of her family, she visited places she had once only dreamed of or read about. Her greatest joy was sharing adventures with those she loved.
Many of Shirley’s best friends were family. Her parents, Ardalene and Burt, had 12 children… 9 girls and 3 boys. One of her favorite pastimes was when she and her sisters managed to find the time to gather for a coffee and a slice of pie at Dorie’s, the old Johnson’s Restaurant, or Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant to share the stories of their families and their lives… the mundane or funny everyday things that bind a family together. Her daughters: Denise Elaine Hume Stewart, Roxane Sloan, and Darcee Hume-Thoren, son-in-laws: Joe Stewart, Jeff Sloan, and Michael Thoren, grandchildren and great grandchildren have many happy shared family memories.
Shirley loved nature and wildlife. She appreciated a bright blue sky, everchanging clouds, and never took tall trees, fields of flowers, or soaring birds for granted. She loved the ocean. Once along the seashore during a storm, Shirley wrapped herself in a blanket and sat outside, thrilled at feeling the sea spray and watching the ferocity of the wind and waves. When enjoying the outdoors, the phrase, “Oh girls, look out there.” was often accompanied by the wave of an arm, as she encouraged others to join in her admiration of nature.
Shirley and Donald also loved animals, their personalities and behaviors. At their homeplace, Shirley and Donald often took in stray animals, caring for them and making them part of the family. Lucky animals.
Shirley was kind, funny, curious, and strong. She will be greatly missed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and son, Clinton Dirk Hume.

Dear Denise, Roxane and Darcee,
We have such wonderful childhood memories of your family when you lived close to us in Wadesville. Our moms were good friends and shared a lot of laughter together.
We still have a woven Indian basket Shirley gave Mom for her birthday one year.
With much love and sympathy,
