
Janis Laverne (Underwood) Stevens, 78, of Boonville, Indiana left peacefully on May 14, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on April 7, 1947, in Central City, Kentucky to Luther E. and Stella I. (Davis) Underwood.
Divorced, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Janis or “Mama J” will always be remembered for her kindness and willingness to help others, even strangers.
When she wasn’t helping others, she loved gardening, doing crafts, and shopping with her daughter Julie and her best friend Brandy. She treasured her greenhouse her grandson Jacob bought her and always loved being outdoors. She also cherished spending time with her grandkids, great grandkids and her family.
Janis is preceded in death by her parents; daughter Jennifer L. Stevens; brothers Doris E. Underwood, Aubry L. Underwood; sister Donna F. Underwood and sister-in-law Marcia Underwood.
She is survived by her life partner Larry F. Fischer; children Jared W. Stevens and Julie L. Stevens; stepdaughter Kerri B. Fischer; grandchildren Joshua L. Deaner (Brittany), Theodore F. Schile (Terra), Bridget L. Gelhausen, Sarah Ritchie (Tyler), Jacob L. Stevens (Danille), Clara Owen, Alexandrea Owen; great grandchildren Tristan M. Deaner, Aiden L. Deaner, Ryker A. Deaner, Willow B. Schile, Stephanie Ritchie, Ezekiel Ritchie, Nora Ritchie, Loralie Ritchie, Eleanor Ritchie, Jireh Ritchie; sister Geral D. Tinsley, Theresa D. Samil (Gary); sisters-in-law Mary Underwood; nieces Tami Tenbarge, Michelle Moore, Sandra Tinsley, Angie Tinsley, Tracey Guinn, and Crystal Guinn; nephews Bryan Underwood, Rodney Underwood, David Underwood, Chad Tinsley and Edward Tinsley; as well as great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on June 22, 2025, at 511 E. Shelton Rd, Boonville, IN 47601 from 12:00 until dark where 70 floating lanterns will be released followed by fireworks. There will be food, drinks and story time about Janis’s life.
