Gearld Eugene Mourer (97) of Mt. Vernon passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his home on August 5, 2025.
Gearld was born June 30, 1928, to Harold and Bessie Mae (Greenwood) Mourer in Warren County, Indiana. Gearld served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Korean War from 1949 – 1951. He was a butcher by trade and moved to Mt. Vernon, IN, in 1972 when he became co-owner of Mt. Vernon IGA. After selling his share of the store, he built GEM Car Wash, became a long-haul truck driver, and ended his career working in the produce department at Wal-Mart. He retired at the age of 88.
Gearld was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 69 years, Eleanor Lee (House) Mourer. His brothers Richard and Robert, and his younger sister, Marcia Caroline Beatty.
He is lovingly remembered by daughters: Teresa Lee (Terri) Branson (Mike), Diana Lynn Mourer, Karen Sue Cross (Roger), and son Gary Gene (Leanna). Eleven grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
Gearld enjoyed his membership in the Masonic Lodge, where he was a Past-Master and a lifetime member. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Vernon and served as President of the Civitan.
He was happiest when he was flying his Cessna 172, traveling to visit family and friends, or being surrounded by his family. He often said, “Gold & silver I have none, but with family and friends I am well blessed!”
The family would like to thank Dr. Courtney Bender for her years of caring for Dad. He said many times, “Just talking to her makes me feel better!” Special thanks to Heidi and the other nurses and care team at Heart-to-Heart Hospice. Your compassionate care for dad and the family over the past few weeks is appreciated.

Uncle Gearld was a kind, loving, honorable, patriotic Christian man whom we loved dearly. Visits were always joyous. He gave us history lessons and life lessons from his own experiences. We will remember them and use them until we meet again.
