
Doris K. Hughes (91) was born March 5, 1935, to Lloyd and Evelyn (née. Beeler) Kramer. Doris had 3 siblings, Dennis Kramer, Leon Kramer and Donna Eberle. She was salutatorian of her class at Chrisney High School and went on to graduate from Lockyear Business School of Evansville.
She married the love of her life Norman O. Hughes in May of 1957 and had 2 sons, Norman L. Hughes and Don Hughes. She had 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She worked for the Purdue Extension Office for 38 years and became Spencer County Auditor for 4 years and helped set a legal precedent for hiring practices in the state of Indiana. She had many hobbies that she was exceptional at such as cross stitching, bird watching, IU basketball fan, Indiana Fever fan and a successful gardener of vegetables and gorgeous flowers. She enjoyed helping on the family’s farm and seeing the spring calves take their first steps. Above all she loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends. She sat with numerous people helping to usher them through their final days. She always made sure everyone who visited left with full hearts and stomachs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers and many friends, including Mayor Nedra Groves.
She will be remembered for her nourishing Nana recipes, her amazing way of knowing all the answers on jeopardy, and the light she brought into every room. She is survived by Donna Eberle, Norman L. Hughes, Don Hughes (Junetta), 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed at her dining table by her good friends at Oakwood Nursing Home as well.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Grandview Civic Center on October 3, 2026, at 1pm in her honor.
