Norma J. Harper

Norma J. Harper, lovingly known to many as “Patsy” Pointer, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by her family. She was 86 years old.  Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Pointer; her father, Fred Pointer; and her sister, Dorothy Crenshaw.

Born on February 23, 1940, in Henderson, Kentucky, Norma lived a life marked by intelligence, dignity, and triumph in a society often inhospitable to women and African Americans in 1960s-1980s America. She graduated from Douglas High School in Henderson, continued her education at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, and began her professional career as a librarian near Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where her love of learning and dedication to public service was evident early on. She later dedicated many years of distinguished service to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana, from which she eventually retired. Her professionalism, integrity, and quiet strength earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Above all else, Norma cherished her family. She leaves to honor and treasure her memory her daughter, Lilah Gael of Louisville, Kentucky; her granddaughter, Jessica Cook of Evansville, Indiana; her sister, Betty Jackson of Henderson, Kentucky; and her brother, Fred Pointer of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by her cousins Anne Cabell and William Pointer, Jr. – both of Henderson, Kentucky; nieces Amie Thomas of Hampton, Virginia, Jamie Douglas of Henderson, Kentucky, M. Michele Jackson Diefendorf of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Monica Pointer of Atlanta, Georgia; nephews Brett Pointer of Atlanta, Georgia, Jerry Carter and Terry Walker – both of Evansville, Indiana; along with several great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Norma will be remembered for her wisdom, grace, humor, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. Her presence brought comfort and strength to family and friends, and her legacy will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. A memorial service celebrating Norma’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in the Museum Conference Room at John James Audubon State Park, 3100 US Highway 41 North, Henderson, Kentucky 42420.

Though she is no longer with us in body, the love, wisdom, and memories she shared will remain a lasting gift to all whose lives she touched.
