John M. Dunn, known as “Big John” to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025 at his home in Princeton, Indiana. Born on November 6, 1952, in the close-knit town of Oakland City, John lived in Oakland City and Francisco for many years before moving to Princeton. John’s journey began as the cherished son of William and Dorothy Dunn as he grew up alongside his siblings, learning the values of hard work.
Though he was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Roy and Katie Risley, sibling Frank Alvis, daughter Melissa Dunn, and brother-in-law Larry Montgomery, his legacy continues through his loving family.
John is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Ann, his children Donovan (Patti), Shawn, and Sarah Akins (Andy); his sister Marilyn Montgomery and brother Raymond “Snook” (Melinda); his eight grandchildren, Mackenzie Graves (Malachi), Melissa, Mackenzey, Charlotte, Ella Akins, Ava Longworth, Ayden Longworth, and Alexis Longworth; along with several nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
John had many jobs, and all who worked with him loved his one-of-a-kind personality. Notably, his employment with KVS Trucking spanned the years of 1989 to 1995, thereafter he began the remainder of his career with Vigo Coal until his retirement in 2017. John was also the Francisco Fire Chief for the Francisco volunteer fire department for several years.
John loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and his lifelong friends. John’s interests also included attending and participating in classic car shows and cruise-ins. Those who knew John loved his wit, humor, and his sense of true friendship. He was never too busy to be a friend, and his memory will live on. He will be remembered with fondness and deep respect by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
John attended Bethel Memorial Church, and we would like to thank all of the church members, family, and friends for prayers, meals, and household maintenance support to help us navigate this season of life.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Bethel Memorial Church, 1520 S Main St, Princeton, Indiana, 47670 with Pastor Kevin Wilson officiating.
Friends may visit from 12:00 pm until service time on Saturday at the church.

John and I grew up together running around in Frisco
in our youth. We hung out together at Leroy’s Gas
Station many times. Rest in Peace John, pray to see
you again in Heaven.
